Our Mission
As parents we know an Altadena childhood is magical. Here, on the threshold of the mountains our children are at once safe and free. That magic has rooted generations of Altadenans, drawn some of us in from afar, and called many back - years after their own Altadena childhoods.
In the early morning of January the 8th, 2025, we watched our beautiful town slip away, as so many of our homes, businesses and community spaces burned. Now the Eaton Fire is out but the magic is still threatened.
Even before the smoke cleared, as a group of Altadena parents with homes standing among the ashes, we were compelled to fight: to help our friends who lost everything, to rebuild the community we loved. In the first days after our evacuation we created Altadena Kindred to provide the children affected by the Eaton Fire with clothes, comfort, and care. We estimate that we have served about 500 children of Altadena, and we will continue to do so. We are committed to transparency in how we channel your generosity via our Instagram profile and website, where we will documenting all of our community events moving forward.
As the weeks passed, it became clear that the mission of Altadena Kindred must evolve. Looking far ahead to a time when the toxic remnants of our beloved town are safely contained, our dream is to restore the accessible wild spaces our families once gathered in, celebrated among, and retreated to. For now, with Altadenans scattered around the city and beyond, we will work to regularly bring us back together by organizing simple gatherings following the seasonal rhythm of nature, with the hope of calling our community back to the magic that we all miss so much.
Together, we will remember the Altadena that was, cherish the community that is, and work tirelessly to care for our most sacred gathering places, until our kindred can return. And together we will recast the spell, so that the children of Altadena continue to know its magic.
